As he approaches his half-decade plus one year in charge, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his continued role with the club is inextricably linked to winning major honors.

Reflecting on: The Arteta Era

The Spanish coach was appointed on December 20th, 2019 and managed to steer the team to an FA Cup triumph a short time later. Yet, that initial silverware stands as his only major honor following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” Arteta responded in response to a query about staying beyond 2027. “Yet it's about today. And many things need to fall into place in the near future as well to warrant that continuation.”

He will mark the six-year milestone with a match versus Everton, the very same club Arsenal met the day after his role was made public.

Present Challenges

As chasing Manchester City taking on West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal could be displaced the summit in the Premier League for the first time. This situation arises even with Arteta managing a squad that has endured over 100 injuries since the start of last season.

Arteta currently has a year and a half left on the deal he signed in 2024, however, he knows that success is required in the immediate future.

Survival in the Job

He went on to explain, emphasizing the daily requirement to validate his position. “My belief is that a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you address the media, how you go into the dressing room, the message you convey.”

He added, expressing gratitude for the consistent faith from the hierarchy, yet identifying the team's buy-in as paramount. “At the end, the key individuals are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, desire to learn and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Latest Fitness Blow

The squad approaches the weekend fixture managing an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a hamstring injury that is likely to see him miss action for a few weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Regardless of the fitness woes and the intense pressure, Arteta feels the club's “objectives and communication” are completely changed from when he began his reign.

Arteta highlighted the record-breaking achievements as evidence of progress. “You look at the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the standard we operate at.”

Arteta concluded, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has not witnessed in the past. And our ambition is to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
