Arsenal's manager remains confident that his squad can keep managing with fitness issues following confirming that attacker Kai Havertz is not ready for several more weeks.

Extended Absence for German Star

The German forward has been out since the summer following an operation on his knee. Originally slated to return earlier in December, the manager stated the player encountered a problem when stepping up his recovery and failed to reach “the next phase.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a group that is much more reliable and has increased versatility,” stated the manager.

Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture

This news presents a dilemma for Wednesday’s match against Brentford. Arteta must choose between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who scored in an unfamiliar forward role on Sunday, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return off the bench in the latter stages. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is available after 11 months out.

Defensive Concerns Persist

Further fitness issues surround defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who sat out the Stamford Bridge game. Consequently, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to start again in the backline for the Premier League front-runners.

Arteta believes the £250m spend on squad depth during the summer has left Arsenal in a much stronger position to deal with such unavailability.

Greater Options Key to Title Challenge

Questioned if increased squad depth was helping their league challenge, the manager agreed. “Yes, since the current term has presented greater challenges in certain positions, and now the situation with the backline,” he continued.

“We learned from the past that we must deploy players in alternative spots, and they need to be prepared to perform various functions if we are to fight at this level. And the example of Mikel Merino.”

Arteta's Support for Frustrated Havertz

Speaking about the setback noted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered more insight. “His recovery was progressing. He was unable to progress to the required step and now it appears like we have solved that issue.”

The manager conveyed his keenness to see him return. “Everyone is eager to have him. Truly, it’s a player that, in my view, I value highly for what he brings to the team, but his mentality, his attitude. I observe his frustration being outside.”

“His playing record is outstanding, he's rarely been injured, and I am eagerly awaiting to have him back around the team playing because I think it’s going to be a significant uplift.”
