Germany's Mayor Critically Injured in Knife Assault, Police Confirm
A newly-elected municipal leader in Germany's western region has been stabbed and left critically injured near her home, authorities state.
The official, 57 years old, is a member of the centre-left Social Democratic party (SPD) and assumed the mayoral role of the municipality in the regional state in September.
Local police report a significant response is in progress in the small town. Investigators say every possibility is being checked, but they are considering a domestic link.
The Chancellor condemned what he called "a heinous act", adding: "We are concerned about the survival of the mayor-elect, the victim, and hope for a full recovery."
The party expressed its party members were profoundly stunned by the attack.
Officials confirm Stalzer's two adopted children - a 17-year-old girl, and a teenage boy - contacted emergency services to authorities at noon (11:00 BST).
The children were later taken away for interviewing and evidence collection. A reporter at the scene witnessed a teenager entering a law enforcement vehicle.
This summer, there was an family conflict episode in the household, which was documented by authorities, security sources said.
