RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several approach shafts providing entry to the facility... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "They were among a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
