New Year Revelers Urged to Dress Warmly with Snowfall Expected Throughout the UK
Forecasters have indicated an icy commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Events Go Ahead Amid Warnings
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are expected to go ahead, unlike last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid advisories for snow over northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," stated the national forecaster.
Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks displays, with no rain and open skies. Readings are due to be low, making extra layers essential, according to forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Widespread Snow Warnings for Friday
Heading into Friday, advisories are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

- Disruptions and cancellations are expected on trains and buses.
The Mercury Expected to Fall Further
As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Public Health Warnings Released
In addition, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials stated this indicated the weather was likely to lead to significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This involves a likely increase in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
