F1 has introduced the official language that will be used to describe the intricate details of its revolutionary 2026 regulations.

The sport is embarking on what is considered the biggest regulation change in its long history starting in 2026, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the compulsory introduction of 100% sustainable fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which retain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a significantly increased energy storage, driving key advancements in the aero packages.

Throughout races, competitors will strategically manage ERS energy – including during hot laps – to secure the optimal lap time.

Exploring the New Tech

The upcoming changes mandate a set of functions that will be clearly indicated on broadcast screens to enhance the viewers' comprehension of the on-track action.

  • Passing Mode: This takes over from the existing Drag Reduction System. It provides a short boost of battery power accessible when a competitor is close behind the car ahead to execute an overtake.
  • Boost Mode: This is a on-demand energy deployment from the energy recovery system that can be used in offensive or defensive moves. It delivers the pilot maximum power at the push of a button.

Both of these key functions will have to be deployed strategically, as the available electrical charge is capped.

  • Active Aero: Both the car's wings change configuration – spreading on the long straight sections for low aerodynamic resistance and increased velocity, and sealing in the corners for peak grip.
  • Recharge: Drivers can harvest energy with energy harvested under braking, or during partial power application at the conclusion of a straight or in certain corners where only partial power is used.

Car Design Evolution

The next-generation machines will be more compact and lighter relative to current models, with a distance between axles cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, car width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight decreased by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is anticipated to be reduced by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although constructors will undoubtedly recover some as they optimize their packages.

Air resistance has been slashed by 40%. The vehicles will feature adjustable aero systems – both wings will move on the straights to cut resistance and boost top speed and revert into place for optimal grip in corners.

Wheels will retain 18-inch wheel rims, but the actual tyres will be slimmer, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and three centimetres on the rear.

What's Changing in the Engines?

The 2026 engines will have an approximate 50-50 split in energy output by the internal combustion engine and the battery and motor, up from about 20% battery contribution in the current formula.

The energy recovery system is simplified through the deletion of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the sophisticated and pricey component that recovered energy from the turbocharger.

Cars will be mandated to operate on fully sustainable fuel, created from plant-based materials or lab-created processes.
