Before McIlroy left, one final question arose. As a huge Manchester United fan, he has been requested to display his trophies at Old Trafford before. So could he be tempted to do it again after his new triumphs?

"As long as they halt the flow of multiple scores in Manchester," he replied with a laugh. "They're getting better. There's a hint of optimism around."
