The Golden State is Fully Free of Drought for the First Time in a Quarter Century.

After a quarter-century span, no portion of California is facing water scarcity. This significant achievement follows grueling years marked by insufficient rainfall that intensified blaze threats and challenged its massive agricultural sector.

A Chart Shows Zero Dryness

The latest assessment from the national drought tracker confirmed that all of California is free from dry or drought conditions. This change came after multiple significant storms that helped fill key lakes like Shasta and Oroville far beyond their long-term norms.

“For anyone 25 or under you’ve only known in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” remarked a weather expert.

After Severe Systems to Wet Holidays

The journey here featured powerful and fatal winter storms that pummeled the state in the not-too-distant past, leading to significant overflow, blackouts, and deaths. Even though those events began to alleviate the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Until late December, regions like northeastern California were deemed abnormally dry. Heavy rains at the beginning of January eliminated those final dry conditions.

The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge

Yet, experts warn that the end of drought status does not mean being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the mountain snow accumulation place it at approximately 70 percent of the typical level.

This mountain snow, which supplies approximately 30% of the state's water as it thaws later in the year, is an essential component for long-term water security. State experts stress that it is not yet time to determine the outlook for the annual water supply.

“The current pattern right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” said a California water official. “The goal is the snow accumulation to increase by April 1st so that we’re nearer to normal.”

Although the monitor shows a clean slate, the focus now shifts to maintaining this positive water situation throughout the rest of the year.
