Two Victims Named in the Ivy League School Incident as Authorities Continue Hunt for Perpetrator.
The pair of scholars who died in Saturday’s mass shooting on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – as a manhunt for their assailant persisted following the discharge by authorities in Rhode Island of the only individual detained in connection in the case.
Remembering Ella Cook
The student Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was described as “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, according to the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which honored her memory at a gathering on Sunday.
She served as the vice-presidency of Brown’s division of the campus GOP group, as the club stated. The White House press secretary also shared sympathies online, stating: “There are no words. Remembering her family and friends, particularly her mother and father.”
An International Student
The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, from Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the Ivy League university, family members said.
Umurzokov’s identity was verified by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.
“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He had big dreams of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and helping people,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a memorial statement.
Details of the Attack
An additional nine individuals were hurt in Saturday’s attack in the school of engineering of Brown’s university in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Authorities said late Sunday that a man aged 24 detained in a search at a lodging about around 27 kilometers from the scene earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“We have a murderer out there,” said the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
He added, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you have to regroup and head another way, and this is precisely what occurred over the last approximately one day.”
Ongoing Concerns
The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, admitted: “We know that this is likely to cause renewed concern for our community”.
The gunman opened fire inside a room in the building on over the weekend, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm pistol, a police source reported to the Associated Press.
Law enforcement that searched the lodging seized a pair of pistols and magazines when the person of interest was taken into custody, according to reports.
The Wounded Victims
Of the nine hurt, one student was released from the hospital, said Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in grave but unchanging health, and another was critically ill, police said on Sunday.
A private school, a private K-12 school in North Carolina, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.
Further Tributes
Cook was honored at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only in her youth... but at Brown she was an incredible light in that institution as well.”
A group leader, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the organization. “She was famed for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and fellow classmates,” he said.
Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by Umurzokov’s death in a tribute. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to his relatives, companions, and fellow students and grieve for of his promising future.”
National Context
The fatal shooting at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US higher education institution with about over seven thousand undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students, happened during one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings reported in the US so far in the current year, according to statistics. The following Monday was the 349th day of the year.
