UK Government Cancels Substantial Loan for Mozambican Gas Scheme Due to Climate and Security Worries
The UK government has canceled a contentious $1.15 billion loan supporting a massive liquefied natural gas development in Mozambique, citing increasing allegations that the initiative contributes to the climate emergency and terrorist attacks in the province.
Government Announcement and Rationale
Business Secretary Peter Kyle announced that the UK would withdraw its financial support for the gas project, coming five years after the deal sparked fierce backlash from advocacy groups over its impact on human rights, safety, and the environment.
“While these choices are never simple, the government holds the view that UK funding of this project will not advance the interests of our nation,” stated Kyle.
The move emerged as the scheme's lead company, French energy major TotalEnergies, is set to restart the problem-plagued initiative, which has been on hold since a devastating Islamist insurgency on a nearby town in 2021 led to over 800 of fatalities.
Background and Growing Risks
The support package was first agreed in 2020. Officials stated they had evaluated the dangers linked to the venture and determined they had grown markedly since that point.
Originally, the UK's finance body had argued the scheme would sustain over 2,000 of UK employment opportunities and could be “game-changing for Mozambique's financial and social progress.”
However, green groups have maintained that the east African nation should be aided to invest more aggressively in clean power to build a lasting green economy.
Opposition and Calls for Broader Action
The initiative served as a lightning rod for violence in the region and was also alleged of infringing upon the human rights of indigenous people who were relocated when development work began.
“It has been evident for years that this project is a disaster for the people and for the climate,” said one activist from a sustainable finance organisation. The campaigner pressed major international banks supporting the project to end their support, saying they “can no longer ignore the issues.”
Another leading climate advocate remarked: “This Mozambique gas project is a enormous carbon timebomb, tied to significant violations. It should never have been given UK public backing in the first place.”
The campaigner further called for that the UK should instead assist nations like Mozambique by helping them to adapt to the effects of the climate crisis and put money in their plentiful clean energy potential.
